Case Studies
Clinical Trial Case Study: Advanced Breast Cancer Trial
Objective:
NexCura's objective for this clinical trial recruitment was to inform potentially qualified breast cancer patients about four clinical trials and invite patients to be screened to participate in the trials.
Criteria for the four advanced breast cancer trials:
- Advanced or metastatic, Her-2/neu overexpression, documented progression, prior anthracycline and taxane regimens, prior Herceptin® treatment.
- Stage IIIb or IV, refractory post anthracycline, taxane and capecitibine, if Her-2/neu overexpression then 6 cycles of trastuzumab.
- Advanced or metastatic, no Her2/neu overexpression, cumulative dose limitations on anthracycline or anthracenedione regimens.
- Stage IIIb or IV, estrogen and/or progesterone receptor-positive, post-menopausal.
Strategy:
- Narrowed patient population to meet highly specific clinical trial requirements, including cancer stage, recurrence, and geographical specifications.
- Send an initial wave of e-mails to a historical population of qualified patients.
- Send additional e-mail messages to appropriate newly registered patients on a weekly basis. The e-mail message contained general information about the trials, general criteria, and both a toll free number and a link to a web site that allowed patients to be screened for the trials.
Results:
During 24 months of recruiting, approximately 4,300 patients were contacted with information about the breast cancer clinical trials. Of those contacted,
- 495 patients responded by either calling a toll free number or going to a Web site to be screened
- 219 patients were screened and determined to be fully eligible for participation
- 143 patients were referred - were willing to participate given site location and participation conditions
Clinical Trial Case Study: Pancreatic Cancer
Objective:
NexCura's objective for this clinical trial recruitment was to inform potentially qualified pancreatic cancer patients about the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial and direct patients to the client's web page for screening.
Criteria for the two pancreatic cancer trials:
- Metastatic and failed gemcitabine –11 investigator sites
- Locally advanced and chemotherapy/radiation naïve – 7 investigator sites
Strategy:
- Narrowed patient population to meet highly specific clinical trial requirements, including metastasis, treatment criteria, and geographical specifications (NexCura messaged patients who lived within a 100 mile radius of the trial sites).
- Send an initial wave of e-mails to a historical population (registrants from the previous few months) of qualified patients.
- Send additional e-mail messages to appropriate newly registered patients either on a daily or weekly basis. The e-mail message contained general information about the trials, general criteria, and a link to a Web site that allowed patients to be screened for the trials.
Results:
During 3 months of recruiting, approximately 596 patients were contacted with information about the pancreatic cancer clinical trials. Of those contacted:
- 94 patients responded by going to a Web site to be screened
- 19 patients were referred - were qualified and willing to participate given site location and participation conditions
